August 2, 2007...Colony's construction workers were busy putting the final touches on Whistler's new waste transfer station, in anticipation of its first day of operation Monday (August 6).
The new station, which will eventually contain a composting facility for Whistler's biosolids, is located in the Callaghan Valley, 1 km along the new access road to the Nordic Centre.
To reduce bear conflict, the station is fully enclosed in a 10,000 volt electric fence and cattleguard, active 24-hours a day, and buried reinforcing wire to prevent bears from digging under the fence. Other measures include a bear-proof culvert under the fence, and transfer of waste occurring indoors.
The buildings were positioned to minimize the effect of prevailing winds, to keep waste from becoming airborne. The buildings will be minimally heated with radiant heaters, just enough to keep floors from becoming frosty. Only full cutoff light fixtures are used on the site to maintain dark sky. Colony's design of the Corr-Span roof system as part of the structural component of the buildings reduced the amount of steel required, as well as costs.
The overall project cost of $4.75 million, included the building of the new site, dismantling of the old transfer station, and the construction of the access road.
In 2006, Whistler generated 14,404 tonnes of waste material and 8,843 tonnes of recycling material, a reduction of 4 percent per capita of material used. Whistler is working toward a zero waste goal.
