CSA A660-M91

The CSA Standard A660, Certification of manufacturers of Steel Building Systems was developed to assist code enforcement officials and purchasers of steel building systems in confirming the suitability and quality of steel buildings.

Since the manufacturer of these buildings is often foreign or remote from the building site, and buildings are frequently sold through a dealer or contractor, and since local code enforcement officials may lack the capability or time to check the structural analysis of a building, problems often occur in determining the acceptability of such structures. It is the purpose of the A660 Standard and the accompanying certification program to alleviate such problems.

This standard demands that the manufacturers production facilities, staff, and quality assurance systems be capable of reliably producing steel buildings acceptable to the intended interpretation of the National Building Code. To ensure that the design and production capabilities are met and maintained, this Standard requires a manufacturing facility to be audited and certified by an independent certification agency. In turn, the manufacturer certifies each building for specific location by means of a certificate of design and manufacturing conformance, signed and sealed by a registered Professional Engineer. This certificate lists the key design criteria utilized in the building design for review and acceptance by code enforcement officials.

The A660 Standard has been prepared by the Technical Committee on Steel Building systems under the jurisdiction of the Standards Steering Committee on Industrialized Building Construction and has been approved by these committees, as well as the National Standards Council of Canada.
